مقدمة
الكلدانيون أمة قديمة الرئاسة نبيهة الملوك وكان منهم النماردة الجبابرة الذين كان أولهم نمرود بن كوش من بني حام باني المجدل. وكان من ولد نمرود بختنصر الذي غزا بني إسرائيل وقتل منهم خلقاً كثيراً وسبى بقيتهم وغزا مصر وفتحها ودوخ كثيراً من البلاد. ولم يزل ملك الكلدانيين ببابل إلى أن ظهر عليهم الفرس وغلبوهم على مملكتهم وأبادوا كثيراً منهم. فدرست أخبارهم وطمست أثارهم. وكانت من الكلدانيين حكماء متوسعون في فنون المعارف من المهن التعليمية والعلوم الرياضية والإلهية وكانت لهم عناية بأرصاد الكواكب وتحقيق بعلم أسرار الفلك ومعرفة مشهورة بطبائع النجوم وأحكامها. وهم نهجوا لأهل الشق الغربي من معمور الأرض الطريق إلى تدبير الهياكل لاستجلاب قوى الكواكب واظهار طبائعها وطرح إشعاعاتها عليها بأنواع القرابين الموافقة لها وضروب التدابير المخصوصة بها. فظهرت منهم الأفاعيل الغريبة والنتائج الشريفة من إنشاء الطلسمات وما أشبهها. ولم يصل إلينا من مذاهب الكلدانيين في حركات النجوم ولا من أرصادهم غير الأرصاد التي نقلها عنهم بطليموس القلوذي في كتاب المجسطي. فإنه اضطر إليها في تصحيح حركات الكواكب المتحيرة إذ لم يجد لأصحابه اليونانيين أرصاداً يثق بها
“ بختنصر بن نبوفلسر “
ملك قبل إحراقه هيكل الرب وخرابه أورشليم تسع عشرة سنة وبعده أربعاً وعشرين سنة. واسمه بالسريانية نبوخذنصر أعني عطارد ينطق. وإنما سمي بذلك لأنه نطق بالعلوم والآداب المنسوبة إلى عطارد. وفي السنة الثالثة من قمعه ملك اليهود رأى مناماً راعت روحه منه واقتصه على علماء بابل. فقالوا هذا خطب عسير لا يكشفه للملك إلا آلهة السماء الذين ليس مسكنهم مع الأرضيين. فاحتدم صدره لذلك غيظاً وتقدم إلى اريوخ صاحب شرطه بإهلاك المنجمين والسحرة و أصحاب الرقي والزجر والفأل. فقال دانيال لاريوخ : مهلاً اتئد ولا تقتل حكيماً ولكن أوصلني إلى الملك. فلما مثل بين يديه مثولاً قال له : أقادر أنت على أن تخبرني بالرؤيا التي رأيت وتعبيرها. فأجابه دانيال قائلاً : إله السماء والأرض هو الذي يبدي السرائر. وأنت أيها الملك رأيت صنماً عظيماً ذا منظر رائع رأسه من الذهب الإبريز وصدره وذراعاه من فضة وبطنه وفخذاه من نحاس وساقاه حديد ورجلاه خزف. ورأيت حجراً انقطع من غير قاطع وضرب رجلي الصنم فهشمها هشماً شديداً. فهذه الرؤيا. وأما التعبير فأنت رأس الذهب بما منحك اللهملكاً عزيزاً وكرامة وجلالة. ويقوم بعدك ملك يكون دونك في العزة. والثالث الممثل بالنحاس يكون دون الثاني. والرابع الممثل بالحديد دون الثالث فيهشم ويدق كثيراً من مجاوريه. أما الأرجل والأصابع التي من حديد وخزف فدليل ممالك مختلفة قوية وواهية. وأما الحجر المنقطع من جبل من غير يد قاطعة فدليل ملك روحاني مبيد كل معبود سوى الواحد الحق يظهر في آخر الأيام. فخر بختنصر ساجداً لدانيال وأعطاه الألطاف والهدايا ورأَّسه على جميع حكماء بابل. وولى أعمامه حننيا وعزريا وميشائل أمر مدينة بابل وسماهم بأسماء نبطية اعني شدراخ وميشاخ وعبد ناغو. ثم اتخذ بختنصر صنماً من ذهب طوله ستون ذراعاً في عرض ستة أذرع. وتقدم إلى جميع عظماء دولته أن يوافوا عيد الصنم. وإنهم إذا سمعوا صوت القرن وباقي أنواع الزمر يخرون سجداً للصنم. فامتثل الجميع أمره ما عدا حننيا وعزريا وميشائل. فسعى بهم قوم إلى بختنصر إنهم لا يعتدون بأمره. فاستشاط من ذلك غضباً وأمر أن يسجر الآتون فوق ما كان يسجر سبعة أضعاف الوقود وأن يكتفوا بسراويلهم وقلانيسهم وبرانسهم وباقي ثيابهم ويزجوا في أتون النار. فلما فعل بهم ذلك أحرقت النار الذين سعوا بهم. فأما هم فمكثوا في النار ممجدين لله وملاك الطل نزل عليهم وأمال عنهم لهيب النار فلم تنك فيهم ولا في ثيابهم ولا في لباسهم. فلما شاهد الملك ذلك بهت تعجباً وقال : أرى الرابع منهم شبيه المنظر ببني الآلهة يعني الملاك. وناداهم بأسمائهم قائلاً : يا عباد الله العلي اخرجوا. فخرجوا من النار ولم يشط شيء من ثيابهم ولا من شعورهم. فرفع بختنصر درجاتهم. ثم رأى بختنصر رؤيا ثانية كأن شجرة في سواء الأرض قد علت حتى بلغت إلى السماء ولها ورق أنيق وثمار كثيرة فيها مطعم لكل بشر. وجميع حيوانات البر وطيور الجو تأوي إلى ظلها. وكأن ملاكاً قديساً نزل من السماء وقال : اقلعوا هذه الشجرة وجذوا أغصانها وانثروا أوراقها وبددوا ثمارها وتتفرق عنها حيوانات البر وطيور الجو وذَّروا عروقها في الأرض إلى أن يحول عليها سبعة أحوال. فاقتص بختنصر هذه الرؤيا أيضاً على دانيال وقال له : أنت قادر على تعبيرها لأن فيك روح الآلهة القديسين. فقال دانيال : أيها الملك الرؤيا لمن يشنأك وتعبيرها على أعدائك. أما الشجرة الموصوفة بتلك الصفات الجليلة فإنك أنت الذي عززت حتى ارتفع اسمك إلى السماء. وأما الملاك القديس الذي رأيت وأقواله تلك فتدل على أن الناس يخرجونك من بينهم ليصير لك تعمُّر مع الوحوش وتُطعم العشب طعماً كالثور ويبلك قطر السماء حتى تحول عليك سبعة أحوال. ثم يثوب عقلك إليك وتستوي على كرسي ملكك. فكفر خطاياك بالصدقات وآثامك بالترحم على الضعفاء لتبعد عنك هفواتك.
ومن بعد سنة لما رأى بختنصر أن رقاب أمم المسكونة قد خضعت له ودانت له ملوكها هيبة له وخوفاً من شدة بأسه طغى بقلبه وشمخ بأنفه وأخذته العزة في نفسه. فسمع صوت هاتف يهتف به هتافاً ويقول : لك يقولون يا بختنصر لقد لفظتك مملكتك وسيهيج عليك الناس. فتمت الكلمة عليه في تلك الساعة وطرده الناس ورعى العشب كالثور. وطال شعره وصارت أظافره كمخاليب سباع الطيور حتى أتت عليه سبع سنين. ثم راجعه عقله وطلبه قادته واستوى على سرير مملكته ومنح مزيداً من العظمة وحمد الله وعلم أن سلطانه إلى دهر الداهرين يهب الملك لمن يشاء ويجعله في سفلة الناس وسقاطهم .

وجدت في كتاب عتيق سرياني مجهول أن اوطولوقيوس المهندس اليوناني عرف في زمان بختنصر وكان مشهوراً في وقته. والموجود من كتبه الآن كتاب الكرة المتحركة إصلاح الكندي وكتاب الطلوع والغروب ثلث مقالات. وأما ثاوذوسيوس فلم نقف له على زمان معين وهو من حكماء اليونان المشهورين وله نصانيف حسان. له كتاب الأكر الذي هو اجل الكتب المتوسطات بين كتاب اوقليدس والمجسطي .
وفي هذا الزمان كان فورون الفيلسوف الكلدي. وكانت حكمته هي الحكمة الأولى التي لم تستقر. وكان صاحب فرقة وله جمع يتعلمون منه الفلسفة الطبيعية وذهب إليها فيثاغورس وثاليس الملطي وعامة الطلبة من اليونانيين والمصريين. وكانت هذه الفلسفة شائعة في يونان إلى قبل زمان سقراطيس. ثم مال الناس عنها وقد انتصر لها ناس من المتأخرين منهم محمد بن زكريا الرازي لأنه لم يتوغل في العلم الإلهي ولا فهم غرض ارسطوطاليس فيه فاضطرب رأيه وتقلد آراء سخيفة وانتحل مذهباً خبيثاً مذهب فورون وذم أقواماً لم يفهم عنهم ولا هدي سبيلهم. وفرقة فورون يعرفون بأصحاب اللذة لأنهم كانوا يرون أن الغرض المقصود إليه في تعلم الفلسفة اللذة الحاصلة للنفس بمعرفتها وهي مع البدن لانجائها من عذاب الجهل في الآخرة كما هو رأي أرسطو لأن النفس لا بقاء لها بعد البدن عندهم .

ملك ثلث سنين. هذا أخرج يوياخين بن يوياقيم من السجن وأكرمه وآكله مؤاكلة بعد سبع وثلاثين سنة وكان فيها معتقلاً. وقتل مرودخ وملك بعده أخوه بلطشاصر.

ملك سنتين. ثم عمل وليمة عظيمة لألف رجل من أكابر دولته وكان يشرب الخمر بازائهم. وأمر وهو يشرب أن يؤتى بآنية هيكل الرب التي سباها أبوه من أورشليم وشرب فيها مع عظمائه. فظهرت قبلته كفُّ يدٍ كاتبة عقابه في ضوء المصباح على الحائط. فرابته الكتابة وأحضر حكماء بابل ليترجموا الكتابة. فعجزوا عن حلها. فامتعض لذلك امتعاضاً شديداً. فأخبرته أمه عن دانيال النبي أنه دراك غيب وحلال عقد. فاستدعاه وضمن له أن يلبسه الأرجوان وأن يوليه ثلث الملك إن أوَّل الكتابة. فقال دانيال : لتكن مواهبك لك واجعل ذخائر بيتك لغيري. أما الكتابة فقراءتها أُحصي إحصاءً وزن وأُعري. وتأويلها : إن الله أحصى ملكك واستلبه. ووزنك زنة فوجدك شائلاً فلذا أعراك من ملكك فأنت عارٍ عرية. وفي تلك الليلة اغتاله داريوش المادي وقتله.
